The "YeMed" Plan

Looking at filling the gaps and providing an appropriate response to the medical crisis affecting children, the YeMed Plan proposes a radical strategy for improving the healthcare conditions of Yemeni children. YeMed prides itself in its collaboration and cooperation with the WHO, the MSF, and the ICRC to coordinate the humanitarian response. The plan is to scale up the responses that are already working effectively and increase their efficiency while protecting the most vulnerable – the children.

  • Reinforcing surveillance: YeMed’s surveillance will allow early detection of warning signs and thus early intervention and monitoring of the disease.

  • Expanding access to clean water and sanitation: YeMed will implement a highly controlled water purification system and send a team of controllers to train the locals and provide information on proper hand-washing and general hygiene, for cholera and diarrhea prevention. The team will conduct on-ground follow-ups every 3 weeks.

  • Expanding access to medical treatment:

    • By getting supplementary mobile health units and emergency medical clinics specialized for children in Yemen, YeMed expects to facilitate a timely delivery of humanitarian assistance whilst offering flexible and viable options for treating isolated and vulnerable groups. The mobile health units will provide community-tailored care and travel to the heart of both urban and rural areas depending on the needs. Our team will train Yemeni paraprofessionals to take over during blockades, during which YeMed will be negotiating access alongside ICRC, MSF and the WHO.

    • YeMed will also establish diarrhea treatment facilities and oral dehydration centers. All aforementioned facilities are expected to be supplied with medical equipment ranging from basic aid kits and hygiene kits to drugs, intravenous fluids, and blood bank supplies.

The main aim of these interventions is to immediately give access to medical aid to children suffering – and sometimes dying – from avoidable illnesses thus preventing further injuries and deaths.

  • Promoting awareness and prevention among the community: Recognizing the importance of an engaging community, YeMed will also conduct awareness campaigns to give children and their families the means to keeping themselves safe. YeMed also incites people to act by either donating or fundraising to be able to cover the healthcare expenses.
